Statistical deviancy: to an extent: ex: genius is statistically a rare quality but it is not considered abnormal. Social discomfort: may or may not be the result of a violation of social norm. Decisions about abnormal behavior involves culture which can change over time. Can affect how people express disorders: ex: people who suffer depression in china focus more on physical symptoms than emotional symptoms. Disorders can be unique to certain cultures: ex: taijin kyofusho japanese fear that one"s body may offend/embarrass others. Accepted standard for defining mental disorders: diagnostic and statistical. Mental disorder syndrome that is present in a person that involves clinically significant disturbances in: behavior, emotion regulation, cognitive functioning. Disorders reflect process dysfunctions: biological, psychological, developmental. Classifications of mental disorders (although difficult) is useful.
