The unique pattern of thoughts/feelings/actions that categorize a person. Research focus: understanding origins/causes of similarities/differences among people. Assumes that our thoughts/feelings/behavior determined by interaction of unconscious psychological processes. People have basic impulses/urges for sex/aggression want to satisfy: development based on struggle of how to achieve impulsive needs. Uses defense mechanisms responses that help protect a person from anxiety and guilt. Repression unconsciously pushing threatening memories/urges/ideas from conscious awareness: ex: loss of memory for unpleasant events. Rationalization attempting to make actions/mistakes seem reasonable: ex: i beat my children because it is good for them. not the real reason parent does this. Projection unconsciously attributing one"s own unacceptable thoughts/impulses to another person: ex: i hate him he hates me. Reaction formation defending against unacceptable impulses by acting opposite to them: ex: sexual interest in a married coworker feelings of dislike. Sublimation unacceptable impulses socially acceptable actions: ex: sexual/aggressive desires artistic creativity/athletic excellence.
