Document Summary

Blending inheritance- gametes contain hereditary determinants that blended when the gametes fused during fertilization. Particulate inheritance- each determinant has a physically distinct nature and when gametes fuse the determinants remain intact. Mendel"s experiments: used the garden pea because it is easily cultivated and is amenable to manipulated and controlled crosses, monohybrid crosses. Hybrid- offspring of crosses between organisms differing in one or more characters: observations led to rejection of blending theory and supported particulate theory, laws. Law of segregation- when any individual produces gametes, the 2 copies of a gene separate so each gamete receives only one copy. Character- observable physical feature: trait- particular form of character. Diploid- having two copies of each gene: haploid- having only one copy of each gene. Punnett square: male gamete shown along the top, female gamete shown along the side. Probability: = 1 if an event is absolutely certain to happen, = 0 if an event cannot possibly happen, = 0-1 all other probabilities.
