Introduction to law & the regulation of business. January 7, 9: what is law, three primary elements, rule, laid down by the government, enforced by the government (punishments/consequences) Not necessary, but in general, most effective, the law should be written down and accessible to the public. This is important because you can"t follow the law unless it"s accessible. Complicated legal system, difficult to figure out your legal obligations, may not even know the law, ongoing debate in terms is there too much regulation or not enough. Offer certainty, stability, predictability, reliability, strong system: types of law consequences, common law versus civil law. Ancient romans, france, spain, former continental european countries, louisiana. Pros: simpler (it"s in the books, will not found guilty/violating a law), judge can abide by the law: civil law versus criminal law. In our common law system we have both civil and criminal law.
