Introduction: social stigma: something a person has or does that others see as bad in some way, most stigmas are unjustifiable because these people do not hurt others but are still punished as victims of stigma. Identifying oneself as gay or lesbian: 2. 8% of men, 1. 4% of women, homophobia discourages identifying oneself as gay. Like other women: socialized to be less interested in casual sex and more interested in relationships and love, relationships grow slowly, majority look and dress like straight women. Just as likely to be mothers: 67% of lesbians are mothers. Unlike other women: more likely to reject the traditional female role, most adolescent lesbians are not aware or certain of being lesbian, tend to see their same-sex attraction in a nonsexual way. Involvement in gay subculture: around age 19, redefining gayness as a positive and viable lifestyle, sense of relief and renewal, commitment to gayness as a way of life.
