An abstraction of reality: using words, pictures, symbols marks or objects to create a mental image in the mind; also known as abstract symbols. Contain unique elements and are shared among a society; are either positive or negative. the personal association one has with a word; emotional or not. Sustains and transmits culture: culture is passed down through generations both orally and written. Edward sapir: theory of there being a connection between culture and language directly affected how we viewed the world. Sapir-whorf hypothesis: language is not just a way of voicing ideas,but it shapes and determines them too. Express imagination and creativity: through language, you can create and play with ideas that don"t exist in the real world i. e. stories and poems.
