Young musicians often do not hold note values for long enough. Use long and short horizontal lines to help students recognize rhythmic patterns, can also help see relation between parts. Sing a capella so that you have control over tempo. Use movement activities to practice quicker macro beat, sound before sight! Movement can help students understand rhythm and form. Change pace of speech for ell, use of simple short phrases with increased pause time. Introduce a song with illustrations that can be shown phrase by phrase.
