Social stratification- structured inequalities between groups in a society, derivative of access to materials. Slavery remains a problem in the us today-- people are severely underpaid. Life chances- opportunities for achieving economic prosperity (max weber) Slavery- social stratification in which some people are owned by others as their property. Surplus value- value leftover once money has been put into training a new employee. Status- how a group is regarded by other members of society other members of a society. Involved in communities, especially politically: lower- k-k/year, not very involved with communities, but encourage kids to do well, only some went to college, working class- people working in manual occupations requiring labor. Lower class- part time workers or are unemployed: underclass- bottom of class system (typically minorities, urban poor, or those belonging to inner city communities, underclass members re constantly under the threats of drugs, gangs, and violence. Income gap between whites and minorities continues to grow.
