ANTH CHPATER 1 NOTES ETHNOGRAPHY AND CULTURE INTRO 1. Ethnographic fieldwork cultural anthropology a. Anthropologist goes to where the people are and does field work i. Means participating in activities and asking questions, eating  foods, learning the language, and watching ceremonies, etc 2. Ethnography is the work of describing a culture a. Aim to understand another way of life from native point of view b. Goal of Ethnography according to Malinowski “to grasp the natives point  of view his relation to life, to realize his vision of his world” c. Ethnography means learning from people not studying them d. George Hicks working in Appalachian valley i. Learned by watching other people where they met and what they  did 3. Fieldwork and ethnography a. Researcher must become student b. Local shopkeepers and people become teachers c. Hicks didn’t try to explain people by what Americans know about typical  family and friends but tried to find out how these people grouped  themselves into families d. Naïve Realism­ the almost universal belief that all people define the real  world of objects, events, and living creatures in pretty much the same way. i. Ethnography requires complete ignorance  e. Goal of fieldwork is to learn the meanings of everything that is going on f. Essential core of ethnography is the concern with the meanings of actions  and events to the people we see to understand g. Ethnopgraphy always ipmles a theory of culture CULTURE 4. Ehthnographers must deal with three fundamental aspects of human experience  when studying other cultures a. What people do (cultural behavior) b. What people know (cultural knowledge)­usually hidden from view c. Things people make and use (Cultural artifacts) 5. Example of riding in the train to explain what ethnographer ahs to study to  understand the full cultural meaning a. Everyone was reading (a cultural behavior) b. To read there were many different cultural artifacts (newspapers, books,  ticket, etc) c. Cultural knowledge involves people understanding the grammatical rules  for English, understanding the marks on the paper, moving eyes from left  to right, sentences on the bottom of one page continue to the next page 6.
