The way of life which makes love the centre of everything, which looks for all satisfaction in loving and being loved: sexual love. It is that we are never so defenseless against suffering as when we love, never so helplessly unhappy as when were have lost our loved object or its love. page 545. Happiness in life is predominantly sought in the enjoyment of beauty. The enjoyment of beauty has peculiar, mildly intoxicating quality of feeling. beauty has no obvious use; nor is there any clear cultural necessity for it. Beauty and attraction are originally attributes of the sexual object religion. Technique consists in depressing the value of life and distorting the picture of the real world in a delusional manner. The superior power of nature, the feebleness of our own bodies and the inadequacy of the regulations which adjust the mutual relationships of human beings in the family, state, and society.
