Youth were treated as the property of their fathers: corporal punishment and harsh beatings were common, corporal punishment: punishing the body, physical punishment. ex: whipping, spanking. Ver little distinction was made between human beings based upon age. Society was heavily interdependent, living and working together in large groups: mechanical solidarity. Age-based distinction between children and adults revolved around whether a child possessed the physiological and emotional functions needed in order to ful ll adult tasks. Once a person turned 7 years old, they were considered an adult. Life was not easy for children: often subjected to practices of abuse and neglect that resulted in short life spans. Those who did survive engaged in the same activities as adults: drinking, gambling, sex. Prevention of misbehavior achieved through informal social control.
