How to document (cite) modern sources: documentation (citation) style: the various academic disciplines use different documentation styles. In the humanities, the chicago manual of style author- date system is widely used. The key feature of this style is parenthetical citations giving the author and date in the body of your essay. These citations are keyed to a list of works cited at the end of your essay. For example, in the passage quoted above, the citations are given in parentheses and, at the end of the essay, the full publication data of these works is given as follows: Lateiner, d. the iliad: an unpredictable classic. the cambridge companion to homer. Slatkin, l. the power of thetis: allusion and interpretation in the iliad. The most important point about documentation style is not which system you use, but that you adopt a single system and use it consistently.
