Document Summary

The readings for monday, march 6th, concern algeria"s war of independence, (which france designated the algerian war ). The war lasted from november 1st, 1954 to march 18th, 1962 with the signing of the evian accords. In lecture i will be providing the historical narrative of that war. It is a narrative, however, whose complexity and varied interpretations one lecture cannot begin to do justice to. Feraoun, journal 1955-1962: reflections on the french-algerian war. Feraoun began to keep a journal of the war a year after it had begun. The journal continues up to his assassination on march 15, 1962, only three days before the end of the war. I plunge you right into the middle of the journal. Feraoun wrote as a kabyle who moved within french circles by virtue of his education. He also wrote with a rare combination of detachment and moving identification with those people he knew so well, kabyle villagers.
