Parasuicide refers to the unsuccessful attempts at killing oneself. About twenty-five million people in the whole world make this attempts. Why are estimates for suicide presumed to be low? (222) It can be hard to obtain accurate data about suicide for many reasons, and it is thought that these estimates are often low. First, suicide can be confused with unintentional overdoses and accidents. Also, suicide is frowned upon by society so relatives and those close to people who successfully take their own lives do not like to acknowledge it: describe the two main strategies for studying suicide. (226) There are two main strategies for studying suicide: retrospective analysis and studying people who survive their suicide attempts.
