Schizophrenia - “dementia praecox”
- Catatonia - alternating immobility and excited agitation
- Hebephrenia - silly & immature emotionality
- Paranoia - delusions of grandeur/persecution
- Associative splitting - breaking of associative threads
Positive Symptoms
- Delusion - disorder of thought content
- Motivational view of delusions→ a way to deal with stress, make sense of world
- Deficit view of delusions→ result from brain dysfunction
- Hallucination
- In brain, Broca’s area is most active during hallucinations
- Suggests that the person is listening to their own thoughts/voices and brain cannot tell the
difference
Negative Symptoms → Approx 25% of schizos display these sx
- Avolition → inability to initiate/persist in activities; apathy
- Alogia→ Poverty of speech
- Anhedonia→ Lack of pleasure
- Asociality→ Emotional/social withdrawal
- Flat affect→ ¼ of schizos have this → no emotions
Disorganized Symptoms
- Disorganized speech
- Inappropriate affect & disorganized behavior → laughing/crying at bad times
- Catatonia
Other Psychotic Disorders
- Schizophreniform disorder→ Schizo symptoms for a few months
- Schizoaffective disorder→ Sx of schizo + other mood disorders (depression, BP)
- Delusional disorder→ Persistent belief that is contrary to reality w/ NO other schiz sx
- Shared psychotic disorder→ getting delusions from being around delusional person
- Brief Psychotic disorder→ 1+ positive sx of schizo for a month or less
- Attenuated Psychosis Syndrome→ Sx of schizo, but are aware of troubling nature of them
- Schizotypal→ Less severe schizo
