Health psychology: subfield of behavioral medicine that studies psychological factors important in health promotion and maintenance. Psychological and social factors influence health in two ways: Affect the basic biological processes that lead to illness and disease. Long-standing behavior patterns may put people at risk to develop certain physical disorders. It is biological but spread due to behavior of people not using condoms. Stress management seems to decrease recurrence of genital herpes. Body goes through several stages in response to sustained stress. Alarm- response to immediate danger or threat. Resistance- mobilize various coping mechanisms to respond to the stress.
