Document Summary

People often look at schools as the source of inequality because there are such blatant differences in the resources and results at schools. In reality, children only spend about 13% of their waking time in school. We need to look at what happens outside of school and resources people are given in their homes as well to determine what school can and cannot do for kids. Students come to school with different sets of knowledge and skills and then kids are taught things outside of school along the way, so we cannot simply compare results and attribute differences to the schools. Summer school is not as effective as one would think, and thus it is not an effective way to close the inequality gap. Most people believe that school in america are no longer segregated; however, this is not the case. Schools that were desegregated by law have been re-segregated.
