SOC 100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Kalamazoo Central High School, White Flight, Teen Mom
Document Summary
The scope of significance and target of social movements varies. A lot of social movement activity occurs beneath the radar of media. Conceptualization of social movements has five key elements: challengers to or defenders of existing structures or systems of authority. Non- governmental for profit organizations are also structures of authority. Based on underlying sets of beliefs values and interpretive frameworks that rationalize distribution and regulation by authority: collective rather than individual enterprises. Challenges include various forms of targeted protest nd exiting from or divesting of authority: act in varying degrees outside existing institutional or organizational arrangements. Pursue objectives mainly through institutionalized means: operate with some degree of organization. Without being organized they will not be able to overcome the challenges that they will inevitably face: typically operate with some degree of continuity. Obviously varies but without continuity in social activity it is hard to see progress made.
