Ch. 10: Power & Politics April 8, 2014 •  Adjudicatio : dispute resolution managed by a judge or other person with power to  impose a settlement (contrast: mediation) •  Band : the smallest maximal social unit, especially characteristic of mobile foragers  (contrast: tribe, chiefdom) •  Big men : informal leader who relies on influence, not power; especially characteristic of  band and tribe organizations (contrast: chief) •  Chiefdoms : that political organization of a society that allocates real power to the leader  or chief •  Chief : a leader with actual power, not just personal influence. Characteristic especially  of chiefdoms (contrast: big man) •  Colonialis : where one society wields political, economic, and cultural power over  another. Most famously, the 19 ­century European empires •  Conflict resoluti : the wide range of institutionalized ways, from mediation to  adjudication, that societies have to contain and settle conflict •  Devianc : behavior that differs significantly from the cultural norm or rule •  House palaver : west African term for moot, or local court •  Influen : the personal ability to lead, of leaders who lack any real power to coerce (see  also: big man) •  La : legislated, proclaimed, explicit rules at the more formal end of the continuum of  norms •  Legal pluralis : situations (especially colonialism) in which two or more legal codes  coexist •  Mediatio : informal dispute settleme
