Her research has found that more people in the us are working more hours than any other country (beats western europe by a lot as well as japan) Questioned why people weren"t fighting the rising hours that they were getting despite their equal pay. Instead she looked at consumer behavior and found that americans got caught in a work-and-spend cycle. People were accumulating stuff at an unprecedented rate. People also had to keep up with social norms and buy stuff that was trending (ex. The country was preoccupied with getting and spending (pg. 11) Parents were feeling the pressures of having to satisfy their kids in a time where social norms were important in society this lead to parents buying stuff to compensate.
