Stage 1: state of transition between wakefulness and sleep. Stage 2: slower, more regular wave pattern, sleep spindle interruption. Stage 3: slow brain waves with higher and lower wave patterns. Stage 4: deepest stage, even slower and more regular waves, least responsive to outside stimulation. Stage 3 and 4 sleep mostly occur during early part of the night. Stage 1, 2 and rem sleep mostly occur during second half of night"s sleep. Characterized by increased and irregular hr, increased bp, increased rr. May play critical role in daily functioning. Improves memory: brain growth/development in children, release of growth hormones is associated with deep sleep. Women fall asleep more quickly, sleep longer, and get up fewer times in the night. As people age, they tend to need less sleep.
