Document Summary

Consciousness- the awareness of the sensations, thoughts, and feelings we experience at a given moment. Waking consciousness- we are wake and aware of our thoughts, emotions and perceptions. Altered states of consciousness- dreaming, sleeping, drug use and hypnosis. Stage of transition between wakefulness and sleep. Makes up about half of the total sleep. The brain waves become slower, with higher peaks. The pattern even slower and more regular. People are least responsive to outside stimulation. Paradoxically- the major muscles of the body appear to be paralyzed. Rebound effect - allowed to rest undisturbed if we lose rem sleep, we will make it up first. Allowing us to rethink and restore information and emotional experiences that we"ve had during the day. Why we need to sleep: sleep permits our ancestors to conserve energy at night- when food was relatively hard to come by, sleep restores and replenished our brains and bodies.
