A tangent to a curve is a line that touches the curve. A tangent line should have the same direction as the curve at the point of contact. Euclid noticed that a tangent line is a line that intersects the circle once and only once. On more complicated line and graphs, a tangent line of one point may intersect the graph. Secant line: a line that intersects (or cuts) a curve more than once. Velocity: the speed and direction of an object. Average velocity: change in position divided by change in time. Instantaneous velocity: the limiting value of the average velocities over shorter and shorter periods of time around the desired time.
