PSY 3121 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Pragmatism, Hypochondriasis, Tachycardia
Document Summary
The theory of evolution was more intense in the us in the 19th century than it is today. Herbert spencer was recognized because of his proclamation of darwinism. He argued that the development of all aspects of the universe is evolutionary. Social darwinism = applying the theory of evolution to human nature and society; met with great enthusiasm in the us. With this idea, only the best were allowed to survive so human perfection was inevitable as long as no action was taken to interfere with the natural order of things. People and organizations should be left alone to develop themselves. Those that could not adapt should be allowed to die for the betterment of society. If the government supported weaker people, they would endure and ultimately weaken society. This was compatible with the american individualist spirit; believed in hard work, self sufficiency, free enterprise, and independence from the government.
