THR 231 Chapter 1: Acting - The first 6 lessons (notes and summery)
Acting : The first 6 lessons
“Art cannot be taught...I help those to develop and educate themselves for honest and
conscientious work”
“What were you trying to attain”
“ concentrate spiritually”
“In such a way that they know and feel immediately that their concentration is less
important than yours”
“An actor cannot exist without a soul”
I thought the talk about how an actor needs a soul and to concentrate on nothing
around them was interesting because that is my favorite thing about theater, is to step
out completely out of your own life and into someone else’s
- Not just talent it is technique
- People change themselves
- Rebirth of human soul (5 senses)
- Can’t teach a student to be talented
- Girl sheds tear = suffering
- Reader below him - can’t teach talent
- Can always do better than now, be humble
- The craft of acting
- Everyone brings their soul experience to a character, paying attention to
struggles, prior lifetimes
- Tone of attitude, just say the word with an intention
- Concentration - focus - the circle of attention
- Building of relationships, table work vs blocking, people saying, others feel, how
you feel about yourself
- Draw IN the audience, make them forget it
- Theater as a MYSTERY, using all the scene
- Being culturally round, know everything about everything to know what you’re
doing
- Have to get out of your own bubble, to understand how they are
“Better understand it, in order to save it
