They made their camps out in the open in skin-covered huts and in caves and rock shelters; they continued to produce smaller and smaller stone tools. Emergence of art; painting on cave walls and stone slabs, and carving tools, decorative objects, and personal ornaments out of bone, antler, shell, and stone. New inventions such as the bow and arrow, the spear thrower, and tiny replaceable blades that could be fitted into handles- appear for the first time. The climate was different; annual temperatures were as much as 50 degrees f (10 degrees c) (cid:271)elo(cid:449) today"s a(cid:374)d (cid:272)ha(cid:374)ges i(cid:374) ocean currents would have made temperature contrasts (different between summer and winter months) more extreme as well. Pleistocene megafauna: huge animals compared to their contemporary descendants; important and dramatic difference: large game animals. Many upper paleolithic cultures relied on hunting.
