Chapter 1: sociologists note current trends such as the boomerang generation where many young adults leave home to attend college and come back home. Her work was overlooked because she was a woman: emile durkheim (1858-1917) french jew who noted that public degradation of jews by non-jews seemed to calm and unify a divided public. Later wrote that public rituals have a special purpose to create social solidarity: people in society are glued together by belief systems. Rituals and public ceremonies create a bond and sense of belonging.
