ENGL 102 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Persuasive Writing
Document Summary
A writer problem has a point, a claim and a thesis. Keeping notes will help you keep up with a writer"s thoughts and views and will help you stay on track for their piece. Most pieces probably have a thesis, but some writers" works do not argue at all. The hard part is thinking critically about the thesis the author presents to you, and how they present it to you. When reading, try to form a clear idea of the author"s purpose. Some works include a thesis without it being thoughtfully put there. Two kinds or key terms for determining a thesis. If the essay advances a thesis, you want to analyze the strategies or methods of argument that support the thesis. When writing an analysis, you want to inform your readers of the author"s methods. Usually in the first, second or third paragraph. Next you will find it useful to write out your thesis.
