This court is the trial court of general jurisdiction in the ri unified state court system. Has original jurisdiction in all felony proceedings, civil matters >,000. Appeals taken to the ri supreme court. Appeals from trials held in district court result in a trial de novo, or entirely new trial, in superior court. Hears cases from the district court, who deals with civil matters ,000-,000. Ri"s 5 counties are divided into 4 jurisdictions: kent, washington, newport, Contract disputes, personal injury, property damage suits certified. During an arbitrary hearing, evidence is informally presented to an attorney/arbitrator who awards the case within 10 days. Speedy case resolution, saving taxpayers millions of dollars and freeing courtrooms. Presiding justice of the superior court is the administrative judge of the court. Establishes calendars, assigns judges, appoints superior court. Administrator and other admin staff, and makes rules for conduct. Appoints jury commissioner and all staff for the case scheduling offices.
