Slave cabins = a part of 2 worlds: public world of slavery, reproductive site to increase laboring bodies, site of containment and exploitation, private world of the enslaved, community formation & family life, reveals foundation of slave resistance. Despite con ict within slave communities, there was a collective understanding of belonging (1830s) enslaved people had increasing access to northern abolitionist propaganda -> gave bondpeople hope of nearing freedom. California lives here with her husband, isaac, & their children. James mcdowell"s slave; hired by george h. young; Proslavery people used the term "amalgamation prints" -> the idea that abolitionists were race-mixers. Began to go & do as she pleased -> had the idea that she was free. This worried young -> believed that it would inspire other enslaved people to think & behave in a similar manner. California hired herself out = greater mobility, money, & freedom.
