COMM 101 Chapter 5: Ch 5_ LISTENING
Document Summary
Hearing: a process in which sound waves stroke the eardrum and cause vibrations that are transmitted to the brain. Listening: when the brain reconstructs these electrochemical impulses into a representation of the original sound and then gives them meaning. Many times we hear but we do not listen. Attending: the act of paying attn to a signal. Understanding: the process of making sense of a message. Listening delity: describe the degree of congruence between what a listener understands and what the message sense was attempting to communicate. Responding: consists of giving observable feedback to the speaker. Feedback helps clarify your understanding of a speakers message and it shows that you care about what the speaker is saying. Remembering: people out remember about half of what they hear immediately after hearing it. Listening can be improved through instruction and training. All listeners do not receive the same message.
