Statement of cash flows explains how the amount of cash on the balance sheet at the beginning of the period became the amount of cash reported at the end of the period; includes cash and cash equivalents. Cash equivalents: short-term investments with original maturities of three months or less that are : readily convertible to cash, whose value is so near to maturity that it is unlikely to change if interest rates change. Examples include - treasury bills, money market funds, and commercial paper. Cash inflows and outflows directly related to earnings from normal operations; relate directly to revenues and expenses reported on the income statement. There are two alternative approaches for presenting the operating activities section of the statement: direct method: reports components of cash flows from operating activities as gross receipts and gross payments. The difference between the inflows and outflows is called net cash provided by (used by) operating activities.
