Means those who know - translated to scholars or the learned. Most important functions of the ulama relate to interpreting islamic law. Other functions relate to theology, teaching, leading salah and preaching in mosques, serving as government officials, supervising trusts and actions as guardians, notaries and scribes. Central role is to act as an imam and lead salah. The learn the quran from a young age - along with arithmetic and other subjects. The have to perform the recitation to get approval of mastery - but no certificate is given for it. Over the years, kuttabs have been replaced by a western style elementary schools. Mainly for teaching, with a mosque attached to it. Mainly sunni - very structure in curriculum. Memorization and recitation, but also understanding and writing are important. Many of the early ulama criticized or tried to avoid contact with the rulers.
