Lots of recent attention, mostly negative and for the wrong reasons. Causes association of islam with violence and fanaticism. Islam is religion of those people who have for some 1400 centuries followed the teachings of prophet muhammad. 1 - submitting to god, essentially an inward mental action though with outward consequences. 2 - a religion; system of beliefs and practices to be ordained by. God, and muslims are the adherents of the religions. 3 - cultures and civilizations, created by muslims. Islam has evolved in tradition and civilization. There are many ways to practice islam. Western media plays a role in showing practices. Translations of key terms can be misleading, so we must consider carefully what is being said. Islam means submission of commitment to god and no worship of anything else. Muhammad was the last of a series of messengers from god. Quran and sunna constitute the basic sources of authority for muslim life.
