Document Summary

Intervention: an effort to change a person"s behavior: replication: the reproducing of the results of a scientific study. Institutional review board (irb): a university committee that examines research proposals and makes judgments about the ethical appropriateness of the research. The value of social research: when you have to predict the results of studies and then find out what they were, you avoid hindsight bias. Archival research: historical and ethnographic (anthropological) descriptions of people in different cultures. If the investigator wants to discern beliefs or attitudes of a group of people, random sampling is important: everyone in the population has an equal chance of being chosen, convenience sampling is not random and can be biased. Correlational research: simply determines whether a relationship exists, experimental research goes further and enables investigators to make strong inferences about how situations or conditions affect behavior. 2 = slight relationship; . 4 = moderately strong relationship; . 6 = very strong relationship.
