S W 325 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: White Privilege, Gender Inequality
Document Summary
Chapter eight: getting off the hook denial and resistance. Leaving someone else to fix the problem doesn"t help. It is easy to fool ourselves into thinking we are not on the hook. The easiest way to get off the hook is to deny the hook exists in the first place. When you deny the reality of oppression, you deny the reality of the privilege underlying that oppression. Privilege invites those in dominant groups to define other people"s experiences for them. Denial can also take the form of seeing subordinate groups to be better off than privilege groups. Envy and privilege can often occur at the same time. One can acknowledge that terrible things happen but still blame it all on the victim. The oppression is blamed on the people who suffer most from it. In this way, those who are blaming the victim, get off the hook. ".
