Hydrolysis reactions that take amino acids, fatty acids, monosaccharides from food. Pass through epithelial lining of gut and go into blood via absorption. Vertebrate digestive systems include highly specialized structures molded by diet: Pharynx(passage of oral and nasal)--> esophagus---> stomach---> small intestine---> products of digestion absorbed--> large intestine---> anus (in mammals) Pancreas- make pancreatic juice, digestive enzymes and bicarbonate buffer. Bile and pancreatic juice secreted into first region of small intestine (duodenum) Innermost layer- mucosa, epithelium that lines the lumen. Muscularis- outside submucosa, double layer of smooth muscle. Muscle have circular orientation, serve to constrict the gut. The outer layer are longitudinal and shorten the gut. Serosa cover the external surface of the tract.
