BIOL 2312 Chapter Notes - Chapter 49: Sphygmomanometer, Superior Vena Cava, Heart Valve
Document Summary
Platelets: not complete cells-- fragments of cells made in bone marrow. Transportation: rbc transport o2, nutrient molecules by plasma, metabolic wastes eliminated by liver and kidneys. Regulation: transports regulatory hormones, temperature regulation(contraction and dilation of blood vessels) Protection: responds to injury, clotting, leukocytes disarm bacteria. Plasma= matrix that suspends blood cells and platelets. Wastes made by metabolizing cells: nitrogen compounds, co2, endocrine hormones. Trace amounts of: ca, mg, cu, k, zn. Alpha and beta globulins-- carry lipids and steroid hormones. Blood cells and platelets circulate in the plasma. Not confined to blood-- can go through the capillaries and into the interstitial fluid (body fluid) Granular: neutrophils (most numerous), eosinophils (4th most) , basophils (5th most) Nongranular: monocytes (3rd most) and lymphocytes (2nd most) Pinch off from larger cells in bone marrow. Releases as injury response-- must have for clotting. Act with fibrin to form a plug that contracts and pulls the ends of wound together.
