Document Summary

The key for the immune system is distinguishing self from non self. Innate recognizes specific parts of molecules that are apart of pathogens. It is quick and uses antimicrobials to fight pathogen. Horseshoe crabs have been found to have parts of the complement system. All bilateral beings had some sort of innate immunity. Adaptive- genetic rearrangements that generate a diverse set of molecules that can recognize any pathogen. A barrier with weapons (like oil and sweat that create a ph environment not favorable to pathogenic microbes) Sweat also has lysozyme-- digests bacterial cell walls. Mucosal epithelial surfaces also prevent entry of pathogens digestive tract, the respiratory tract, and the urogenital tract all protect. The microbes in food are killed by lysozyme in saliva or acidic stomach, or digestive enzymes in intestine. Gastrointestinal tract is home to normal flora who also out compete competitors.
