Nonverbal communication - all aspects of communication other than words! Includes not only gestures and body language but also how we utter words: in ection, pauses, tone, volume, and accent ! Includes features of environments that effect interaction, personal objects such as jewelry and clothes, and physical appearance ! Nonverbal behaviors account for 65% to 93% of total meaning of communication! We will identity the differences between non verbal and verbal communications! Nonverbal and verbal communication is similar in 4 ways: symbolic, rule-guided , may be intentional or unintentional , re ects culture ! It is arbitrary, ambiguous, and abstract ! People may attach different meaning to a wink! Depending on context and people involved, a wink might express romantic interest, signal a joke, or indicate that there is something in the persons eye! Within particular societies, we share general understandings of which nonverbal behaviors are appropriate in various situations and what they mean !
