Document Summary

Skeletal system includes bones and all things that bind them together (cartilage, ligaments, connective tissue) Structures of long bones diaphysis, 2 epiphyses, 2 metaphyses, articular cartilage, periosteum, medullary cavity, and endosteum: diaphysis long, cylindrical main portion of the bone, made of compact bone. 2 layers dense bone and marrow cavity: epiphyses proximal and distal ends of a bone, made of mostly spongy bone, metaphysis region between diaphysis and metaphysis, articular cartilage thin layer of cartilage where a bone articulates with another bone. It reduces friction and absorbs shock at freely movable joints: periosteum connective tissue surrounding the diaphysis, medullary cavity cylindrical space within the diaphysis that contains yellow bone marrow, endosteum thin membrane that lines the medullary cavity. Osseous tissue contains an abundant matrix that is 25% water, 25% collagen, 50% crystalized mineral salts. 4 kinds of bone cells osteocytes, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteoprogenitor cells: osteocytes mature bone cells that help maintain metabolism and repair other bones.
