Ethnicity is based on cultural similarities and differences in a society or nation. Ethnic group- share certain beliefs, values, habits, customs, and norms because of their common background. Ethnicity- identi cation with and feelings part of an ethnic group and exclusion from certain other groups because of this af liation. Situational negotiation of social identity- one identity is used in certain settings, another in different ones. Minority groups- inferior power and less secure access to resources: usually ethnic groups. Race- an ethnic group assumed to have a biological basis. Racial classi cation- attempt to assign humans to discrete categories based on common ancestry. Species- population whose members can interbreed to produce offspring that can live and reproduce. Genetic material- inherited from a common ancestor. Natural selection- process by which the forms most t to survive and reproduce in a given environment do so. Descent- assigns social identity on the basis of ancestry.
