Physiology 335 lab 4 notes: the hypothalamic-pituitary-endocrine axis (pgs. Tropic hormones: hormones that stimulate the secretion of another hormone. Pituitary gland is also called the hypophysis: anterior pituitary adenohypophysis, posterior pituitary neurohypophysis. Posterior pituitary is not actually a gland it is an extension of the neuronal components of the hypothalamus. Release hormones into capillaries, which drain into the veins for circulation. Hypothalamus communicates with the anterior pituitary via the hypothalamohypophyseal portal system: portal: 2 sets of capillaries. Hypothalamus communicates with the posterior pituitary via the hypothalamohypophyseal tract. Median eminence: junction of the infundibulum and the hypothalamus: capillaries in this make up the hypothalamohypophyseal portal system. Hormones of the posterior pituitary are synthesized in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei in the hypothalamus; they are not made in the posterior pituitary. Hormones released by the posterior pituitary: oxytocin. May contribute to emotional connections: adh or vasopressin. Adh conserves water by lowering urine output. Vasopressin increases bp by constricting blood vessels.
