Chapter 9: individuals with emotional or behavioral disorder. Mentally ill: generic term used by professionals outside field of special education to refer to individuals with emotional or behavioral disorder. Chronic condition characterized by behaviors that differ from age norms and community standard to such degree that educational performance is affected. Four dimensions of behavior: frequency at which behavior occurs. Intensity of behavior: duration of behavior, age-appropriateness of behavior. Disturbed and disturbing behavior: disturbing occur in certain place or time and in presence of certain individuals, disturbed behavior occurs in many settings, is habitual, and is part of behavior pattern. Transient nature of problematic behavior: common for children and youth to have periods in lives that are characterized by conflict, crisis, depression, stress, and ineffective decision making. Typical and atypical behavior: exhibit unusual behavior, tourette syndrome: neurological disorder characterized by motor tics and uncontrollable verbal outbursts.
