Module 42: trait theories, social cognitive theories, and the self: research defines personality as stable, enduring behavioral patterns, allport describes them in traits. He gives more of a definition of the traits rather than an explanation: the mbti puts personality into 126 groups. Good for job mastering, but not necessarily for research: exploratory rates, a trait = a characteristic pattern or behavior to feel, factor analysis. A procedure to describe the variability of a trait: biology and personality, extraverts seek stimulation because brain arousal is otherwise lower, dopamine activity is higher in extroverts. Personality inventories: ask a wide range of agree-disagree questions to access specific personality traits: mmpi is the most commonly used personality test for research. It was originally used to identify abnormal personalities. Reserved or extraverted: agreeableness, uncooperative and ruthless or trusting and helpful, neuroticism. Calm, secure, or anxious and insecure: openness. People"s behavior is defined by the interaction of their personality with their outer environment.
