ENGL 250 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Psychoanalysis, Narratology, Dramatic Structure
Document Summary
Decision reveals something deep about the character. Boy and girl get together in the end. Narratology: the study of how narratives work, the study of different narrative structures, storytelling strategies, aesthetic conventions, types of stories (genres), and their symbolic implications. Emerged as an interdisciplinary field in the 1980s. Cinema is a combination of mimesis and diegesis, terms derived from the greek philosopher aristotle in the poetics. Diegesis: story; telling; the literary epic and novel are closer to diegesis. Traditional narratives almost always feature a character seeking (desire) a goal. One or more obstacles get in the way of this goal, creating conflict. Conflict can exist between opposing characters (the wizard of oz) or opposing groups (battleship potemkin) Archplot: causality, closed ending, active protagonist, linear time, consistent realities. Miniplot: coincidence, linear time, open ending, consistent realities, passive protagonist. Plot: what happens in the order it"s presented. Ex. plot vs. story in fried green tomatoes.
