Not an either/or concept, but tendency to lean towards one more. Introspection theory: looking inward to tell us who we are. Self-perception theory: inferences by observation of own behavior. Self-other knowledge asymmetry: gained from both internal/external sources. Planning fallacy: underestimation of time to do task. Impact bias: overestimating impact of emotional events. Trait se: stable se over time, personality based. State se: changes based on momentary feelings. Sociometer theory: se tells how much we"re accepted. High se, low rejection frequency & vice versa. Terror management: se gives protection about morality concerns. Narcissism: inflated sense of self, no regard for relationships.
