SLWK 230 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Interpersonal Communication, Computer Network
Document Summary
Interpersonal communication is a major part of human existence that every educated person needs to understand. In a survey of 1,001 people over 18 years of age, 53% felt that a lack of effective communication was the major cause of marriage failure. One study found that among the 23 attributes ranked as very important in hiring decisions, communication and interpersonal skills was at the top of list, noted by 89% of recruiters. Interpersonal communication: the verbal and nonverbal interaction between two (or sometimes more than two) interdependent people. Although largely dyadic (two-person) in nature, interpersonal communication is often extended to include small intimate groups such as the family. The way you communicate, the way you interact, will influence the kind of relationship you develop. Interpersonal communication exists along a continuum that ranges from relatively impersonal to highly personal. Role vs. personal information: impersonal relationships will respond to each other according to roles they are currently playing.
