The first chapter, called symmetry, set up the main characters and their early lives. Redniss chose to name the chapter symmetry because pierre and marya"s lives were fairly symmetrical up until they met. They both went through heartbreak, loss, death, and their educations were similar too. The art in the chapter, having drawings of pierre on one side of the page and drawings of marya on the other, just went further to show their lives" symmetry. In the chapter, we see that pierre curie was born in 1859. He was thought to be a daydreamer and not very smart, but after getting his university degree at sixteen years old and publishing a paper on heat waves at twenty-one, those thoughts about him were dispelled. He found a young woman whom he fell in love with, but after her death, pierre swore off romance. he told himself that being in love would be bad for his scientific career.
