Fatty acids: long chain hydrocarbons with a carbocyclic acid group at one end. Glycerol: three carbon poly-alcohol that contains 3 hydroxyl groups. Terpenes: long-chain lipids that are components of many biological important pigm as chlorophyll and the visual pigment retinal. Every cell membrane is composed of phospholipids in a bilayer. Collection of proteins that float in the lipid bilayer. Membranes are structurally supported by intercellular proteins that reinforce the m shape. Use networks to control the lateral movement of some key membrane proteins. Lipid rafts: heavily enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids. Interact with each other and form ordered structure. Distribution of membrane lipids in the plasma membrane is asymmetrical, with one leaflet enriched in the glycerol phospholipid phosphatidylcholine and in sphingolipi. Triglyceride: 3 fatty acids attached, one to each carbon of the glycerol backbone.
